Bharatiya Vayu Sena or the Indian Air Force is known for its power across the world. IAF which is which is the air arm of Indian Army plays key role in guarding the country from air threats. 


IAF is the fourth largest air force in the world. IAF is only next to USA,China and Russia. Its motto 'Touch The SKy With Glory' inspire many. It has more than 127,200 personnel and 1,700 aircraft. 


IAF is the seventh strongest air force across the world. It has 60 air bases across the country. With 16 air bases Western Air command is the largest air command. 


IAF has the highest station at Siachen Glacier at a height of 22000ft. It has the first and the only military base at Farkhor Air base located in a foreign land. 


IAF started recruiting women in 1990s but they could serve for 14-15 years as short service commission officers. Women are not allowed to serve on sea-faring warships or join infantry, armoured corps and artillery.


IAF started inducting women pilots from 1991 for choppers and transport aircrafts. IAF's pilot training include three stages. They are as follows


Stage I: 55 hours of flying on Swiss Pilatus PC-7 basic trainer aircraft for 6 months at Air Force Academy, Dundigul (Hyderabad). Cadets trifurcated into fighter, helicopter & transport aircraft streams after this stage 
Stage II: 87 hours on Kiran aircraft for 6 months in Hakimpet, Telangana 
Stage-III: 145 hours on Hawk advanced jet trainers for 1 year at Bidar or Kalaikunda airbases
