We hear about governments spending thousands of crores for tree plantation but not many are bothered about chopping trees which are decades old. The practice is eroding the existing green cover in most of the regions. And those that are planted newly also get uprooted in no time.

Andhra Pradesh Speaker Kodela Siva Prasada Rao has shown the way when he reportedly nabbed some smugglers when they were axing a tree which is a century old near Firangipuram in Guntur district. He spotted this felling act while travelling from Guntur to Narasaraopeta.
Media reports say he had noticed few miscreants chopping a tree for extracting timber. When they were trying to flee, his security men reportedly nabbed them and they were handed over at police station. This is indeed an act which is a wakeup call for everyone concerned.
Valuable trees are being chopped off and it is an irreparable loss. Andhra Pradesh speaker has proved how one should lead by example for protecting environment! This is just a tip of the iceberg on how trees are being felled for various needs. Government should take strict measures.
