Congress party seems to have lost faith in the abilities of Rahul Gandhi, to single handedly lead the party out of the woods, in which it is now. Thus the high command of the party is sending signals on one side, as to the entry of Rahul into the major role in the party or else the Government and on the other side it is going to enlist the efforts of Priyanka Gandhi, to take care of the matters in Uttar Pradesh.
But the thing to be remembered here is that politics is not a part time occupation. Because, till of now Priyanka is on and off into politics, depending on the election season. This frequent role shift could lead to a failure in forming bonds of trust with the public at large. So, this time around too the masses of U.P may remain in a hesitant mode, as to pinning their hopes on this charismatic leader, who resembles Indira Gandhi.
Moreover the mass appeal of Indira Gandhi rested with her pro-poor policies and the courage to sail alone, if need be. But, as of now, the party which talks of the heritage of Indira, is busy planning the cuts on the subsidies that are given to the poor. This is sufficient enough of an indicator for the common man in the street, to see the gulf that has emerged in the leadership styles and the polices of the party overtime.
It is this unbridgeable chasm, which could mar the prospects of Priyanka in emerging as the leader with a hand on the pulse of the people. The same factors have so far led to the failure of her brother Rahul on the political front. Hence it is immaterial whether there is only one Gandhi family member in the politics or a bunch of them are there, what matters are policies and unflinching dedication to the masses.
