In a land mark  verdict the Supreme Court today  said freebies promised by political parties in their election manifestos  does not come under corrupt practices as long as there is no law against its  practice .

The court has asked  the Election Commission to frame guidelines for regulating contents of manifestos and ensure that political parties do not offer freebies to win polls. The court said the present law; promises of freebies made in the manifesto do not amount to corrupt practices.

 Hearing a public interest petition filed by an advocate S Subramaniam a bench of justices P Sathasivam and Ranjan Gogoi said the election manifesto also should be brought within ambit of code of conduct. The petition was filed challenging the J Jayalalithaa government's decision to implement AIADMK's poll promise of free household items to voters,

 The judgment can have wide ramifications and can put a curb on political parties promising different types of freebies like distributing laptops, TVs, grinders and mixers, electric fans, four gram gold thali and free food grains if voted to power.

  The court directed the election commission on the task of framing guideline for regulating the contents of election manifesto and also passin g of a separate legislation in the issue.
