Sources from Chennai have stated that the Tamilnadu government had currently expressed concern over the alarming increase in number of attacks on Indian fishermen by the Srilankan Navy and had asked the centre's intervention for release of 42 of them.
The Chief Minister Eddapadi K. Palaniswamy had written to Modi stating that the issue of arrest of 14 fishermen in two separate instances by the Srilankan Navy. He had urged the central government to take immediate action by using diplomatic measures and to reverse the trend. He added that the people of the state have strong belief that the fishermen have genuine claim to Palk Bay fishing ground from where they are been apprehended.
Eddapadi said that he had sought
immediate intervention of the center to save the livelihood of the fishermen. He
had also asked PM Modi to ensure immediate release of 42 fishermen and 141
boats and added Srilankan policy of abduction of boats indicates its increasing
intolerant attitude and the scant respect for the Indian diplomatic efforts.
