While it has been always a common thing for politicians to get accused of misusing the tax payer’s money for their selfish needs, this was always a nonexistent scenario in states like Kerala. However, a huge accusation has been made to damage the reputation earned by the state thus far, and that happens to be a complaint on the speaker that he had purchased spectacles for INR 50000.
Kerala Marxist communist party speaker P.Sriramakrishnan is the one involved in the act, and he has also given a peculiar explanation for the same. According to the laws of Kerala government, the MPs and MLAs from Kerala can use the government funds for medical reasons, and also for medical issues and needs of their families, and a section of the tax is kept allocated for this purpose exclusively. While there had been rumors on misuse of these funds, a social activist V.Binu had filed an RTI petition to get exact details of how the medical funds are used.
And from the RTI report it was found
that P.Sriramakrishnan had spent 45000 for spectacles and 5000 for frame, and
the health and sanitation minister Sailaja had used 28000 Rs for buying
spectacles. The reason he has given for the misuse of funds is that the doctors
had given him instructions to get better spectacles, and hence he had to
use the fund to get his eye sight better.
