While Smart cameras have been used for various purposes like monitoring babies, or for surveillance purposes, with the advancement of technology, it has not become a bane that the same smart cameras have become modes of spying the same person who uses it itself. Due to vulnerabilities in the smart cameras, intruders and anti social elements are able to access these smart cameras even through their devices.
Through these issues in smart cameras, the attacks can happen to users, such that, intruders can access audio or video through cloud service, gain remote access to camera and use it access local and external networks. They can also upload malicious code in the cameras, and can also indulge in data theft, stealing personal information of the users like social network account details and other personal data. These attacks can be possible once intruders get to know the serial number of the camera.
During a research by Kaspersky labs
with 2000 cameras, it was found that they had dedicated IP through internet.
With the wrong understanding of ioT device security people are mostly getting
exposed to intruders. Kaspersky security labs have given some security tips, to
change the default password and make it complex and change periodically.
Kaspersky has also advised on looking after security issues in other devices,
prior to purchase of new smart devices.
