In a recent honor killing case in Kerala, a father has stabbed his 21 year old daughter on the day of her wedding.  Malappuram's Poovathi kandi based Athira, had planned to get married to Brijesh, an army officer from Koyilandi, and the couple had been in love for several years. However, Athira's father Rajan was always against the love, as Brijesh belonged to Dalit Community, and Athira belongs to the OBC caste of Ezhavas.

Besides, it must be noted that earlier once Athira had planned and eloped with Brijesh but came back following promise from her family that she will get married to Brijesh ultimately, with her father Rajan accepting with hesitation. With the wedding preparations in progress, Rajan had entered the hall when he was under the influence of alcohol, and started an argument with his daughter Athira, and he finally stabbed her.

As the marriage was planned at Brijesh;s residence in Koyilandi, Athira's brothers and mother weren't at home when the incident took place. After the attack began, Athira ran to her neighbor's house, but she was stabbed in the kitchen, and she received heavy injuries and ultimately passed away. She was declared dead when she was brought to the KMCT College hospital itself in Mukkam.  Rajan also threatened his neighbors not to inform the cops. Previously, Rajan had accepted to the marriage only after the couple sought police help.
