The name of the Cyclone 'Fani' is suggested by Bangladesh. In fact, it is pronounced as Foni and it means 'Snake' or 'Hood of a Snake'.  So, who name these Cyclones? For Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, the naming will be done by an eight member group called WMO/ESCAP.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has devised a mechanism where countries submit a list of names from time to time and names of cyclones are chosen from that pool. India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan and Thailand send names of tropical cyclones developing in the North Indian Ocean to the regional committee.

 


Recently, the Cyclone was named as 'Fani' from a list containing 64 name suggestions. 8 Countries named 8 names each and they are chosen. Earlier, Cyclone Titli was named by Pakistan, Cyclone Ockhi was named by Bangladesh. Also, the name for the cyclones should be easily understood by the people.
