SEZ’s, also called Special Economic Zones were expected to change the Indian economy like never before and they were started in 2004 after UPA came to power. The objective was to create special business zones for the employment market to grow. However they turned into Special Exploitation Zones with money power and muscle power forcing poor people to leave their land and in AP where more than 200 SEZ’s were created during YSR tenure, there were allegations that these only served real estate purposes. But one SEZ seems to have turned everyone’s attention. It is the Sri City SEZ at Satyavedu in Chittoor district at the border of Nellore district and located just 60 kilometers away from Chennai. This SEZ has reportedly emerged among the top in India attracting investments worth 30,000 crores in last five years and created 1,00,000 jobs. Today it has become home to Cadbury, Pepsi, Honda and major European and US companies including Japanese companies and the French company which is supplying metro coaches to Chennai Metro has also reportedly started its coach building factory here to supply metro coaches. It is being said that only such genuine projects can lift Rayalaseema in the future!
