Polio is a viral infection, mainly affects the children below five years and causes paralysis or sometimes leads to death. This disease can be prevented through frequent vaccination sittings. This virus is spread through contaminated food and water, seen especially in villages. To completely eradicate the spread of Polio in India was the main slogan. The country has seen many deaths and so wanted to stop it. 170 million children are vaccinated every year in India by the Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme. India along with eleven countries were declared as Polio-free countries and were appreciated for the efforts that went in. A committee of eleven members of health experts in epidemiology, virology, clinical medicine and specialities had meeting for two days at World Health Organisation’s regional head quarter at Delhi as a review to declare. The regional director for WHO South-East Asian countries, Mr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh said that it is momentous victory for the country and it is a sign of what they can do for the children. The regional director also said that it is important to eradicate the disease globally for better future. Meanwhile, he reports that the disease still prevails in countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. He discussed about the official number records and said that there is not even one single can reported in the country.
