According to the 2011 census,, the population of Andhra Pradesh was 8.46 cores. Census put the number of households at 2.08 cores. White ration cards are given to each of the Below Poverty Line families at the rate of one for each family/household. 2.01 core white cards have been issued in the State. This means that about 95% of AP’s population is very poor: Below poverty line. AP may not stand at the top of anything, but surely, no other State in the country can boast of such abysmal poverty  this showed that just about 5% of the Sate’s population is Above Poverty Line. How far above the APL the 5% population is not known, but the current elections have revealed quite a lot. Throughout India, so far, (till 5th May), during the current elections, an amount – CASH - of Rs 279.33 cores is reported to have been seized. Of this, Rs 132.67 criers – 47.5% of the money was seized in Andhra Pradesh alone. (How much of it was seized in Telangana and how much in Residuary Andhra Pradesh is not readily known). Since 95% 0f the State’s population is BPL, this illegal money seized, could have come only from the APL 5%. What is more surprising is that nobody is reported to be claiming the seized money. Similarly throughout the country, till 5th May, 2.12 core liters of liquor is reported to have been seized. Of this, 1.34 core liters, representing 63% of the seizure was from Andhra Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh is not at the top in any field of endeavor. It is heartening to note that apart from having the highest percentage of BPL families in the country, we stand at the top in the matter of illegal cash being seized along with the highest percentage of liquor seized. They make the State very proud. Let us not forget that the figures above represent only the money and liquor seized. How much more of cash and liquor went undetected is anybody’s guess. Some people claiming to be Know-Alls assert that the detected portion was only about 10% of both money and cash, while some others claiming to be equally (or even more) knowledgeable claim that the undetected was only about 10%. Allhowever agree that the seized money/liquor was only a portion. Possibly it was just the tip of the iceberg. It is mind blowing: that only 5% of the State’s population could throw away so many cores of rupees and liters and not be bothered about the seizure, and pump in so much more of liquor and cash into the system treating the seized portion as just peanuts, and saturated the voters with these goodies in an effort to win elections.
