After the Hyderabad High Court ordering a crackdown on traders for using the chemical calcium carbide openly to ripen fruits, food safety officials have said that even high levels of chemicals are being used in vegetables which are sold in Hyderabad's markets.
These vegetables are reportedly being dipped in coloured dyes, whichis nothing but a violation of the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act. Many vendors who sell such vegetables seems to be collecting the vermin infected ones, considered unfit for consumption, and then they colour them with this artificial colouring.

If adulteration is observed in the sample after testing, a court case is being filed and the penalty could involve a jail term of nearly six months, as well as fine of Rs 5 lakh. According to news reports, most green vegetables such as peas, gourds and cucumbers are also being dipped in chemicals like copper sulphate of crystalline blue colour which imparts vegetables a fresh green look.
