In a decision that would certainly gladden the hearts of scores of agitators in Srikakulam district, recently the AP cabinet had cancelled the controversial thermal power plant project in Sompeta. The cabinet meeting which happened on Saturday had finally scrapped this deal.

This was struck by the previous YSR led Congress government with Nagarjuna Construction Company Limited (NCCL) for construction of a 2,640 mw power plant in Sompeta. Now GO 1107 which was issued by the YSR regime in the year 2008 offering 972 acres to NCCL is therefore annulled.

Palle Raghunatha Reddy added that government

Briefing the media persons after the crucial cabinet meeting, AP’s information minister Palle Raghunatha Reddy added that government would be re-alloting this land for promotion of multi-product agri-based industries. The government's decision has now come finally in backdrop of police firing.

This was done on the protesting farmers and fishermen which led to the TDP’s subsequent poll promise regarding cancellation of this power plant deal. Four persons were reportedly killed and over 60 injured in July 2010, when the police had opened fire and took up lathicharge to quell the angry agitators protesting who were against the thermal power project.
