The first day of the third test between India and Australia began with India winning the toss and opting to bat first. Hanuma Vihari was promoted up the order, to open alongside debutant Mayank Agarwal, and the duo initially laid a platform, for a stand before Vihari fell after a struggling 8(66).

However, Mayank stood firm, and scored at regular intervals, alongside the dependable Cheteshwar Pujara, and went on to score his maiden half-century on debut and was finally dismissed after scoring an important knock of 76(161).

Skipper Virat Kohli joined Pujara and the duo mixed patience with temperament and scored picking the bad deliveries as Pujara went on to score his half-century, and India ultimately ended day 1 on 215/2, with Pujara on 68(200)* and Kohli on 47(107)* and Cummins had figures of 2/40.
