The fifth ODI of India's tour of New Zealand began with India winning the toss and batting first, and Henry and Boult dismissed the Indian opening batsmen skipper Rohit Sharma (2), Dhawan (6), Shubhman Gill (7), and Dhoni (1) who returned after a match. However, Ambati Rayudu stood firm despite the wickets falling.

Vijay Shankar scored a steady 45(64) while Jadhav scored 34(45). Rayudu missed a century as he was outscoring 90(113), while Hardik Pandya's heroics towards the end to score 45(22), took India to 252. Henry scalped 4/35, while Boult picked 3/39. As New Zealand began chasing 253, they lost opener Nicholls 8(15) early, but skipper Kane Williamson 39(73) and Munro 24(19) stood for a while before getting dismissed.

Neesham (44) and Latham (37) forged a stand and tried to resurrect the team from a fall, before calamity struck, as Chahal and Pandya kept picking wickets at regular intervals, and after Santner was out for 22(37), the doors for a New Zealand Victory were closed, as they ended at 217, losing by 35 runs. India won the series 4-1, and Chahal scalped 3/41.
