Furthermore after winning just 52 seats in the election, the Congress chief had resigned. But his loyalists in the party continued to put pressure on him to take back the resignation. Perhaps saying that he takes the entire blame for the loss, rahul added, “It would be unjust to hold others accountable but ignore my own responsibility as the president of the party. I am responsible for the loss of the 2019 elections. Accountability is critical for the future of our party. It is for this reason that I have resigned as the Congress President.”

Moreover he said that many of his colleagues suggested that he should name the next Congress president but said he does think it was correct for him to do so. Apparently "Many of my colleagues suggested that nominate the next Congress President. While it is important for someone new to lead our party, it would not be correct for me to select that person. Immediately after resigning Suggested to my colleagues in the Congress Working Committee that the way forward would be to entrust a group of people with the task of beginning the search for a new President. Further as President of the Congress Party I am responsible for the loss of the 2019 election. Accountability is critical for the future growth of our party. It is for this reason that I have resigned as Congress President.
